Ach Na Ha

Ach na ha

Ach na Ha is a two-bedroom residential new build in the Conservation area of Tobermory. The site was used for commercial storage, and a ruined stone shed faced the street. Unfortunately, the shed can not be refurbished and will be replaced with similar massing facing street, and extended to the back of the site using more modern forms to take advantage of views over Tobermory bay.

Design principals

The new build will be made up of two parts. The proposed form aligned with the boundary of the plot to the street will be clad in traditional white painted render, and will have a hipped-roof; while the perpendicular leg, which will be hardly visible from the street, will be finished with dark stained timber cladding. The whole building will have a corrugated metal roof, as the original, but with dark grey colour. In this way, the proposal fits in to the conservation area; yet at the same time allows the main living areas to approach the views, and make the most of natural daylight.
